Promoting healthy eating is part of promoting health in the workplace. Research has shown that the benefits of improving health in the workplace include:

  • increased motivation of employees and a better working atmosphere, leading to more flexibility and better communication

  • more innovation and creativity, and a rise in productivity;

  • improved public image of the company, making it more attractive as an employer.

Poor nutrition is associated with increased risk of conditions such as heart disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and compromised oral health. It is also associated with obesity.

in the UK, the majority (around 62%) of adults are either overweight or obese. Obesity is estimated to result in approximately 7.1 million working days lost each year and costs the economy £6.1 billion million.

Any organisation, large or small, can take simple action to promote healthy and sustainable eating and drinking and make the healthier choice the easier choice

1. Encouraging sustainable practices in the workplace can include discouraging the use of plastic bottled water. Bottled water consumption contributes to plastic waste, which poses environmental hazards. By promoting the use of reusable water bottles and providing access to filtered tap water, workplaces can significantly reduce their ecological footprint.

2. Ensuring availability of healthy food and drinks at workplace is a key aspect of promoting workplace health. Stocking vending machines and cafeteria options with fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-sugar beverages provides employees with healthy choices throughout the workday.

3. Encouraging healthy and sustainable eating habits among employees is vital for fostering a thriving workplace environment. Providing nutritious food options in the workplace cafeteria or kitchen can empower staff to make healthier choices during their workday. By incorporating locally sourced, organic produce and sustainable protein options, such as plant-based proteins or responsibly sourced meats, workplaces can promote both personal wellness and environmental awareness. Educational workshops on mindful eating, healthy eating can empower employees with the knowledge and skills to make healthier food choices both at work and at home.

4. In addition to offering healthy food options, workplaces can promote sustainability by minimizing food waste. Implementing practices such as composting food scraps, donating excess food to local charities, or encouraging employees to bring reusable containers for leftovers can significantly reduce the environmental impact of food consumption in the workplace. By fostering a culture of mindful consumption and waste reduction, organizations can contribute to a healthier planet while supporting the well-being of their employees.

Through collaborative efforts and ongoing initiatives, workplaces can play a pivotal role in promoting healthy and sustainable eating habits that benefit both individuals and the broader community.
